βLet me introduce you to something that might make the leap feel less like a leap.
You don't have to choose between the safety of the job you always knew and the terror of walking away from it with nothing underneath you. There's a middle structure, one that's been around a lot longer than the conversation about it. Chances are you already know someone living inside it, you just didn't have a word for what they were doing. It's called a portfolio career, and it exists so the pivot doesn't have to be all or nothing. So you don't have to burn the one thing down to build the next thing up. If you've been stuck between staying put and jumping blind, this might be the third option nobody handed you.
The RebOOOt Report
A portfolio career isn't a trend, and it isn't a personality quirk. A management thinker named Charles Handy described it back in the 1980s: careers built "in parts," pieces that add up to something bigger than any single one of them could be alone.
A couple of things worth knowing before you decide whether this fits you:
- It's not new. Handy named this over 40 years ago, long before "reinvention" was something people put in an social media bio.
- The old safety net isn't as safe as it used to be. Companies are increasingly cutting seasoned, high-salary, mid-to-senior individual contributors specifically, to fund AI investment, not just the newest hires. Seniority used to be protection. Lately it's a bigger target.
At its core, this is risk management. A single employer is a single point of failure, one layoff away from your entire income going to zero overnight. A portfolio, built with intention instead of assembled by accident, spreads that risk out, so no single piece has to hold up the whole floor.
Nobody calls a diversified investment portfolio a lifestyle choice. They just call it not being reckless with your money. What if your income got to work the same way?
THE SHIFT
Here's where it might actually fit you: if you've been treating "several things" as proof you lack focus, when it might really be proof you're already managing risk better than you're giving yourself credit for.
That doesn't mean every mix of jobs and projects is a portfolio career. Some are scattered, reactive, and held together by whatever showed up this month instead of anything you chose. The difference isn't how many things you're doing. It's whether the pieces are intentional and whether they're actually building toward something together, or just pulling in five directions and calling it flexibility.
So the real question isn't "am I doing too many things." It's "would I choose this on purpose, or am I just letting it happen to me." Those are two different situations, and only one of them deserves the name we're giving it here.
And if you're doubting whether you could actually pull this off, look closer at what you're already doing. Walk into most companies right now, and you'll find someone doing the same thing this newsletter is describing, just without the label: one marketing lead who's also the social strategist, who's also running events, who's also writing the newsletter at nine at night because there's no one left to hand it to. If that's you, you've already been juggling multiple roles and keeping every plate spinning inside someone else's org chart. That's not proof you couldn't handle building this on your own. It's proof you already have.

βHere's the RebOOOt:
You've already got the skills. Here's how to start building the pieces on purpose.
List your pieces. Circle the ones you chose. Cross out what just accumulated. What's left is your real mix.
Write one sentence connecting the pieces you circled. Can't finish it? That's the gap to close before you add anything new.
Say your honest answer to "what do you do" out loud. If it sounds like an apology, rewrite it until it sounds like a decision.
Set a date to decide. Build the pieces on purpose, or consciously choose one lane. Either is fine. Drifting isn't.
You don't have to already believe this is your path to start noticing whether it fits. Some of what you're already doing might already be a portfolio career, just without the word for it, and without yet seeing it as a strategy instead of a compromise. The paragraph answer isn't proof you're behind. It might be proof you're already further along than you thought.
That's the RebOOOt.
