Welcome back.

Not to a blank slate. Not to a vision board that requires becoming someone else by March.

Welcome back to what's already on your plate. The offers. The promises. The content pillars. The "I'll get to that" pile from last spring.

January isn't about adding more. It's about asking better questions about what's already here.

What stays? What evolves? What ends? This is the recommitment issue. So, let's edit before we expand.

First, let's talk about a term we used often in our corporate media days, one that reframes everything: Sunsetting.

Not quitting. Not failing. Not abandoning.

Sunsetting is the strategic, intentional close of something that served its purpose. It's how networks retire shows at their peak, how platforms phase out features that fulfilled their function. How publishers let beloved columns end with dignity.

There's no shame in it. There's no drama. There's only clarity. This worked. This mattered. And now, strategically, intentionally — it's time.

You're allowed to sunset:

  • The offer that got you here but won't get you there
  • The content format that feels like a chore
  • The client type that drains more than they pay
  • The collaboration that sounded good on paper, but doesn't fit your brand
  • The version of your brand — or yourself — you built three years ago

The Shift

The Strategic Sunset

This month's micro-experiment: Write down one thing you've been half-committed to for months (maybe longer). Then finish this sentence:

I'm sunsetting this because it served its purpose: ______. Now I need ______.

Notice the difference? Not "I'm giving up." Not "I failed." I'm making a strategic decision to close this chapter with intention.

That's the power of the word. It removes guilt. It adds gravitas. It says: I'm the editor of my own brand, and this is a decision, not a defeat. You're not quitting. You're sunsetting. And that makes all the difference.

If this has you rethinking what stays and what goes, we’ve built something for that. It’s a chance to move forward with more clarity, more focus, and a plan you’ll actually follow.

Details in the PS (or peek now if you hate waiting).

The Pulse

Strategic Sunsets & Pivots That Didn't Apologize

Here's what we're studying this month, brands that shifted without the "sorry for the confusion" energy:

JW Anderson basically said: we’re not chasing the fashion hamster wheel anymore. In 2025, the label repositioned as a curated lifestyle proposition, craft objects, homewares, artisanal goods, and fashion on a slower, more deliberate timeline (less “drop drop drop,” more “this belongs here”). Lesson: Your next era doesn’t need explaining. It needs commitment.

Microsoft didn’t negotiate with nostalgia. They announced they’d retire Skype to focus on Microsoft Teams (free), then followed through: Skype retired May 5, 2025, with a straight migration path (sign into Teams Free) and data export options. Lesson: Sunsets work when the “what’s next” is crystal clear and you don’t beg everyone to come with you.

What this means for you:
You don't owe anyone an explanation for tightening your focus. Evolution isn't betrayal. It's strategy.

The Drop

The Brand Audit in 5 Questions (Swipe This)

Use this as your January check-in.

  1. What made me money last year without making me miserable?
    (This is what stays.)
  2. What did I say yes to that I'd never say yes to again?
    (This is what ends.)
  3. What did my best clients actually hire me for, not what I thought they hired me for?
    (This is your real positioning.)
  4. If I could only keep three things in my business, what would they be?
(This is your core. Protect it.)
  5. What would I do if I trusted myself more?
    (This is your next move.)

And if you’re sitting there thinking, “Cool… but what does that look like in real life?” here’s a signal hiding in plain sight: the way people are searching, saving, and choosing right now.

So, before you run off and add ten new goals to prove you’re serious about this year, steal this from Pinterest Predicts 2026:

People aren’t searching for “more.” They’re searching for more specific. More point of view. More texture. More identity. Less default-setting branding. Less “trying to appeal to everyone.”

That’s not just a style forecast. It’s a marketing truth: When everything is neutral, nothing is memorable.

So take this as permission to do what you already know you need to do: commit to a lane.
Make your work easier to recognize, easier to buy, and easier to trust.

And if you want a January rule you can actually keep, make it this:

  • Refine before you reinvent.
  • Sunset before you stack.
  • Choose signature over sameness.

Because the goal isn’t a bigger year.
It’s a cleaner one, with influence, income, and your Saturdays intact.
